How does UNSPSC classification of products and invoice lines work?

Qvalia assigns UNSPSC codes to invoice lines and to products in catalogs, price lists and item registers. The code describes what was bought in a structure that is the same for every supplier, so purchases can be compared and analyzed without depending on each supplier’s own product names.

The UNSPSC hierarchy

UNSPSC groups products and services in levels, where each level narrows the one above it: segment, family, class and commodity, with an optional business function level. What are UNSPSC codes? describes the structure in detail.

Classify products through the API

  1. Send a list of products to the categorisation endpoint of the Enrichment API. Each product needs your own id and a product_name.
  2. Store the polling ID returned in the response. Classification runs asynchronously.
  3. Collect the result. Each id is returned with its UNSPSC classification, so you can match it to your own records.

UNSPSC in Peppol documents

Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 carries item classification on each invoice line in the item classification identifier (BT-158). The classification scheme is stated with a code from UNTDID 7143, where TST stands for UNSPSC. A line can therefore carry its UNSPSC code in the invoice itself.

Common uses

  • Spend analysis: group purchases by segment, family and class across suppliers, departments and business units.
  • Catalogs and price lists: add codes to items that lack them.
  • Procurement: follow spend per product or service category and compare suppliers.
  • Accounting: map UNSPSC categories to your chart of accounts with Qvalia’s mapping tool.

Look up a single code

To find the code for one product or service, use UNSPSC search.
