The various Peppol message types represent the different electronic business documents that can be exchanged in sales and purchase transactions between organizations in the Peppol network. Messages include invoices, credit notes, orders, responses, catalogs, punchouts, and more. They are XML files in a specific format structure and use Peppol ID as the identifier address.
The exchange utilizes OASIS UBL 2.1 and ISO/IEC 19757-3 Schematron to automate document validation.
Peppol BIS Billing
The e-invoice format in Peppol. The message must include buyer reference or purchase order reference, and invoice lines can contain products or services, quantity, net amount, buyer accounting reference, time period, order reference, etc.

Peppol BIS Billing Credit Note
Peppol BIS Billing 3 supports UBL credit notes. The CreditNote document type determines that the document is a credit note; minus signs do not turn an invoice into a credit note. A negative invoice is a different correction method and uses the Invoice document type with negative quantities and amounts.

Peppol BIS Message Level Response
Peppol BIS Message Level Response (MLR) reports whether a business document has passed message-level validation. It is distinct from a transport receipt and from a business response such as Invoice Response. OpenPeppol is replacing MLR with Message Level Status (MLS) in the eDelivery layer: the MLS activation window starts on 1 March 2027, MLS becomes mandatory for service providers on 1 April 2027, and MLR is retired on 1 May 2027.
