Peppol is an international interoperability framework and network for exchanging structured business documents, including e-invoices, orders and catalogues.

Its main benefits are a common set of technical rules, standardised document specifications and a four-corner network model. Organisations can connect through one Peppol service provider and exchange supported documents with participants served by other providers.

Structured documents can reduce manual data entry, improve data quality and support automation. The result depends on the quality of the source data, the receiving system and the implementation by the service providers involved.

EU Directive 2014/55/EU requires public authorities covered by the directive to be able to receive and process electronic invoices that comply with the European standard EN 16931. It does not require every public body to use Peppol, although many public-sector organisations use Peppol as an implementation channel.
