Peppol Message Level Status, often abbreviated as MLS, is a status message used in the Peppol eDelivery layer. It allows a receiving Peppol service provider to inform the sending service provider about the status of a received business document.
MLS is used after a document, such as an invoice or order, has been exchanged through the Peppol network. The message can indicate whether the document has been rejected due to validation errors, whether delivery to the receiver has failed, or whether the document has been forwarded to the receiver with or without confirmation.
A Message Level Status can, for example, indicate that:
- the message has been rejected because it does not meet technical or formal requirements
- the document could not be delivered to the final receiver
- the document has been delivered to the receiver with confirmation
- the document has been forwarded to the receiver, but delivery cannot be confirmed
MLS should be distinguished from both transport acknowledgements and business-level response messages. Transport acknowledgements relate to the actual transmission of the message through the network. Business-level response messages relate to decisions made after a document has been accepted for processing, for example if an order is rejected due to stock availability or other business reasons.
Peppol Message Level Status builds on Message Level Response, but is used between Peppol Service Providers rather than directly between business parties. Its purpose is to improve traceability and reliability in document exchange by providing clearer status information between the service providers handling the message.
MLS uses UBL ApplicationResponse and Peppol validation rules. The status is expressed through specific response codes, including delivery with confirmation, delivery without confirmation, and rejection or failed delivery.
