The Electronic Address Scheme code states which register an electronic address comes from. It sits in the @schemeID attribute on cbc:EndpointID and qualifies the seller and buyer electronic addresses, BT-34 and BT-49. The same digits under two different schemes identify two different parties. Both the address and its scheme are mandatory in Peppol BIS Billing.

The buyer address sits at the same position under cac:AccountingCustomerParty.

Denmark has three codes in active use and they are not interchangeable. CVR identifies the legal entity, P a production unit and SE a tax registration. Use the identifier under which the intended receiver is registered.

A second group, PEPPOL-COMMON-R040 to R057, checks identifier formats in EndpointID and applicable party or legal-entity fields. These rules can detect a Swedish organization number in the wrong format, a Danish CVR number of the wrong length or a GLN that fails the GS1 check.

Severity varies by rule and release. R040 to R043, R049, R050, R052 and R053 are fatal. The Italian rules R044 to R047 and the Dutch rules R054 to R057 are warnings, and OpenPeppol has stated that the Dutch rules will become fatal in a future release. R052 and R053 changed from warning to fatal in 3.0.21.

3.0.21 removed 14 codes from the EAS list, added none, and changed the description of 11 others. OpenPeppol states that the list had been pointing at the wrong source and contained codes that were not usable.

The removed codes are 0037, 0147, 0154, 0170, 0177, 0193, 0194, 0202, 0203, 0205, 0212, 0213, 0215 and 0217.

A scheme code stored in your customer master that no longer exists in the current list fails BR-CL-25 or PEPPOL-EN16931-CL008. A stored code may remain unnoticed until current validation, regression testing or a master-data audit detects it.

Code 0037 is the Finnish LY-tunnus. It remains a valid ICD code, so it may still appear as a party identifier inside a document, but it is no longer valid as an electronic address scheme. It was also removed as a participant identifier scheme, with a removal date of 31 December 2024. Code 0216 is the active OVT scheme commonly used for Finnish electronic addresses. Other valid schemes may also be used.

Code 0217 remains valid in the ICD list for identifying a Dutch establishment in document-level party identifiers. It was removed from the EAS list in Peppol BIS Billing 3.0.21 and must not be used as the scheme for cbc:EndpointID. An EndpointID with schemeID="0217" fails PEPPOL-EN16931-CL008, while PEPPOL-COMMON-R057 continues to validate the format of applicable 0217 party identifiers.

Correct. Scheme and value both present, value without formatting characters.

Wrong. The scheme identifier is missing, which fails BR-62 or BR-63.

Wrong. The value carries the separator used in the Swedish register, which is not how the participant is registered.

Wrong. Code 0037 is no longer an EAS code, so the scheme fails BR-CL-25 regardless of the identifier value.

Use the scheme under which the receiver is registered, as published in the receiver’s SMP entry.

A company can hold more than one Peppol registration, and organizations may register separate identifiers per unit. Confirm the identifier for the intended receiver. International schemes such as GLN and LEI are country independent, so the EAS code does not have to match the buyer’s country.
