A Peppol Participant Identifier, commonly called a Peppol ID, identifies a participant in the Peppol network. A participant that receives documents must be registered by a service provider, with its supported document types and processes published in an SMP. A sender does not necessarily need to be registered as a receiver, but every transmitted message still contains a sender identifier.

A Peppol ID is normally written as an identifier scheme followed by the identifier value, for example 0007:5567321707. The four-digit scheme code states which identification scheme is used; the value must comply with that scheme.

OpenPeppol maintains the official participant identifier scheme code list. Which scheme an organisation can use depends on the scheme rules, the country and the verification performed by the service provider. For example, GLN and DUNS identifiers are used internationally, while scheme 9959 for an EIN is specific to the United States. See the current Peppol code lists.

Peppol uses distributed service metadata. The SML points to the recipient’s SMP, where the sender’s service provider discovers the recipient’s Access Point and supported document and process identifiers. The optional Peppol Directory is a separate search service and is not the routing registry.

Større organisationer med flere aktivitetsområder, filialer eller datterselskaber bruger ofte GLN-numre, f.eks. når flere enheder deler det nationale virksomhedsregistreringsnummer.

Eligibility for a Peppol ID depends on the identifier scheme, national requirements and the service provider’s identity checks. Sole proprietors should ask their provider which identifier can be registered without exposing unnecessary personal data. A GLN or DUNS number may be an alternative where the applicable scheme rules allow it; availability and fees are set by the issuing organisation.

Svenske Peppol-id'er, der er registreret med svenske virksomhedsregistreringsnumre, starter altid med "0007" som identifikationstype. Qvalia bruger sit CVR-nummer som identifikator til at modtage forretningsmeddelelser og har derfor Peppol ID "0007:5567321707". For organisationer, der bruger GLN-numre, er koden "0088" efterfulgt af den 13-cifrede kode, for eksempel "0088:1234567891234".
